How do I 'become' a Referee?Printable

Are you looking for a part-time job that pays well, has flexible hours and allows you to enjoy the game you already love?

Are you watching your brother, sister, son or daughter play and you are convinced you could do a better job than the referee?

Maybe your club requires that each team also register a referee - and you are wondering what it takes to become one?

This Washington State Soccer Referee video will give you a very good idea of what to expect.

Entry Level Clinics

To become a US Soccer Federation referee, you start by attending an Entry Level Clinic given by a specially trained and registered instructor. You can earn one of two US Soccer Federation badges:

  • Become a Grade 8 Referee (able to work any level Youth match and preparing to work Adult matches), or
  • Become a Grade 9 Referee (able to work Youth Recreational matches U-14 and below).

To choose between them you need to first decide what level of games and assignments you want to do over the next year or so, and how much time you want to commit to training. So while it is likely that young referees would only be interested in working Youth matches, an Adult might be interested in working both Youth and Adult matches.
